Since Kelly Slater came on to the pro surfing scene in the 90's, he has been recognized as one of the best pro surfers in the world. Pro surfer Kelly Slater competes in the ASP World Championship level and has 8 surfing world champion titles. Growing up in Florida provided Kelly the chance to learn surfing at his pace and gradually move up to the more challenging surf locations around the globe. Kelly Slater is sometimes called the Michael Jordan of Surfing, Slats, SL8R and also Shadow or Ghost, because he occasionally shows up very late to events. Life Facts: Kelly has a daughter named Taylor, born in 1996 to his girlfriend at the time. Jack Johnson wrote a song about a Taylor, which some have guessed is describing his childhood friend’s daughter Taylor Slater. Kelly's father died to throat-cancer in 2002 and, according to Kelly, this helped expand his awareness in life. In 2003, Kelly Slater wrote a surfing autobiography called Pipe Dreams. Pipe Dreams gives a nice overview Kelly Slater’s career, and includes his life facts, successes and challenges he has faced. He is considered a very grateful person to all that have helped him become who he is.
